Versions in service

Seen from today, the Leopard 2 has a very impressive service record. Rolled out 40 years ago, countless versions were designed or used. Tanks received constant updates, which makes it hard to have an overview on which ones are actually in service today. Lets try a list. As many country specific localisations cover only radios and small arms, versions are grouped by main categories.

Where did all them Leo's go

Austria received a total of 114 used Leopard 2A4 from the Netherlands plus a single turret. 40 of these tanks were taken out of service and sold to Germany. 56 Leopard 2 are still in service, 18 are stored and available for sale.


Chile has received the delivery of 140 used Leopard 2A4 from Germany. Of these, 115 are for operational usage. The Other 25 are for training and spare parts donators.

Denmark received 63 used Leopard 2A4 from Germany. 57 vehicles are still in service, but upgraded to Leopard 2A5DK. The other six were used for spare parts. The vehicles are about to receive another upgrade to Leopard 2A7DK.

Finland procured 124 used Leopard 2A4 from Germany. In addition, 100 Leopard 2A6NL have been procured from the Netherlands. 10 of the Leopard 2A4 were modified to Leopard 2R, 10 to Leopard 2L and x to AAG.

Germany has a very special role in the long list of Leopard 2 users. Not only is it the producer of the tank, it also had the biggest fleet in service. Today it is still producing tanks on demand, but also upgrades used tanks and offers them on the international market.
2150 Leopard 2 were produced for the German Army. Out of these, 350 were upgraded to Leopard 2A5. All other vehicles were taken out of service. 225 of the A5 were upgraded to Leopard 2A6 and following A6+, A6M and A6M+. Out of these 225, Canada received 20 vehicles, which were replaced later on by 20 Leopard 2A6 from the Netherlands. Those final 20 vehicles were upgraded to Leopard 2A7.
Today Germany operates 205 Leopard 2 in different flavours of the A6 and 20 Leopard 2A7.
Out of the 350 Leopard 2A5, 105 were sold to Poland, which leaves 20 Leopard 2A5 still left in german stocks.
From the 2.125 vehicles with versions until A4, 1.775 were either sold or are being kept for future upgrades. Out of these, 63 went to Denmark, 100 to Canada, 140 to Chile, 124 to Finland, 183 to Greece, 108 to Spain, 138 to Poland, 96 to Singapore, 298 to Turkey and 103 to Indonesia. Sweden also leased 160 Leopard 2A4, but those were handed back to Germany in 2009. 40 Leopard 2A4OE were bought by Krauss-Maffei from Austria and another 42 Pz87 got acquired by Rheinmetall from Switzerland. Realistically, vehicles have to be taken out which are used for static displays or technology evaluation. But even then, Germany should have over 490 older Leopard 2 available in stock. These are not in service anymore, but available for upgrades.











Switzerland produced a total of 380 Pz 87. Out these, 134 were upgraded to Pz 87WE. Switzerland still operates an additional 90 Pz 87. 12 additional vehicles have been converted to Kodiak AEV and another 12 will be converted to Leguan ABLV. 42 tanks were sold to Rheinmetall and later turned into engineering vehicles. The rest of the fleet, 90 Pz 87, were taken out of service and stored. Those might reenter service if needed, but more likely those would be sold too.
